Proverbs Day 16 – Sweetness to the soul

Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. (Proverbs 16:24 ESV)

Yesterday we talked about how a gentle answer can abate anger. Today, let’s consider the power of gracious words.

What are gracious words?

The word grace in the Bible is goodness toward those who have no claim on, nor reason to expect, divine favor.*

When we feel we deserve a word of thanks or praise for a good deed done, we are not necessarily moved by it. And when our deed is entirely overlooked, it’s natural to be disappointed or to allow bitterness to creep into our hearts.

But gracious words are not only sweet to receive, but encourage our heart and can even have a positive effect on our health…

“Welcome home, I missed you so much,”  restores the weary husband.

“You’re the best Mommy in the world,” redeems the despairing mother.

“No one could’ve done it better,” revives the weary child.

“I don’t deserve a friend like you,” refreshes the heart of a fellow sojourner.

What are some gracious words you’ve received lately? How have they impacted your mood, heart, health?
