Proverbs Day 10 – Heed the warning signs

Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out. (Proverbs 10:9 NIV)

Have you ever gone above the speed limit? Made a U-Turn where it was clearly marked not to? Run through a red light? Gone the wrong way on a one-way street?

If you have, and weren’t pulled over by a police officer and given a ticket, you will understand how this rules-of-the-road metaphor relates to our verse today.

If everyone obeyed road signs, we could be fairly confident there would be no accidents on the roads. It’s when someone disregards them, casualties occur. Sure, there are times we break the rules and get away with it. But how do you feel afterward?

When I inadvertently run a red light or break the speed limit, I immediately scan the area for a squad car – for fear of exposure and penalty.

The Proverb tells us, all crooked paths will be found out. Every rule we’ve ever broken, test we’ve cheated on, lie we’ve told, will be revealed. This makes me feel very uneasy –  more so than if I were running for public office and the media searched through my personal records. 😉

But if all our tickets were paid, lies confessed and forgiven, wrongs made right, we could walk securely with confidence. We would never fear retribution or judgement. That’s exactly our position in Jesus Christ – a clean slate. We’ve been given Jesus’ righteousness – his perfect standing before our Holy God! So we can walk upright, not fearing punishment because he took ours on himself over two thousand years ago.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8 NIV)

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV)

And though it is difficult to always walk in integrity, we trust God to give us the ability. Ever in communication with him – confessing and abiding in his great love and grace.

Just writing these truths fills my heart with praise for the Lord! Join me in thanksgiving won’t you?
