In Jars of Clay

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us…(2 Corinthians 4:7 NIV).

Last night I poured tea into a ceramic mug, but as I raised the cup to my mouth the handle broke into pieces in my hand. Most likely it weakened from use.

Funny comparison, I have also weakened. In the last couple of years my knees have stiffened, my back gets sore, and I can’t read a thing without my glasses. Much like the mug, my body is becoming more fragile and worn-down. But this verse tells me God placed his treasure in my jar of clay to reveal his power.

Two questions come to my mind: What treasure and what power?

Earlier in the chapter, Paul tells the believers God made the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, shine in our hearts (2 Corinthians 4:4, 6 NIV).

So the treasure is Jesus’ Spirit, which dwells in our hearts and reveals God to us personally.

And the all-surpassing power?

The resurrection power of Jesus Christ! Our circumstances may bring great stress, confusion, criticism, and even physical harm, but the power and presence of God within us enables us to persevere. And the result of perseverance is strengthened faith and enduring hope.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. (2 Corinthians 4:16-17 NIV).

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for shining your light in my heart and revealing your love and character in the person of Jesus Christ. In Christ, my sins have been forgiven and I am now able to call you Father. You amaze me as you demonstrate your strength in my weakness, your power in my fragile frame. You are my rock and my redeemer. Amen.

  1. I often forget about the power that I have access to through the Holy Spirit. When I don’t draw on that power, I am much more susceptible to Satan’s attacks. Thank you for reminding of this truth.
